Puzzled

We (and I use this term loosely) have been working on a couple puzzles the last few weeks. My strategy is a little different than Crystal's. I thought I would explain them both so that everyone could appreciate them.
Crystal's Puzzle Strategy:
1. Open puzzle box
2. Begin with edge pieces
3. Work from definite areas to fuzzy areas
4. Complete puzzle

Seth's Puzzle Strategy:
1. Open puzzle box
2. Keep as many pieces together from whoever put it together last time
3. Help Crystal in increments of 5 minutes, each time celebrating when a piece is correctly put into place.
4. Insert the last "lost" piece at the very end (honestly, I have no idea how it ended up in my pocket)

The photo to the left is the last puzzle "we" completed. It was one of those mystery puzzles with no picture on the front of the box. Tricky. (Please notice all the red and green. Not nice.)

Extravagant Giving and the Sin of Hoarding

I have been pondering the sin of hoarding lately. I like security, and often I find security in keeping things around me - whether I need them or not. My stuff can cause me to sin. One thought that has surfaced was:

how does "waste not-want not" work when "the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want"?

I understand that wasting what we have (food, possessions, resources) is equally wrong for we fail to properly appreciate and use what God has give us.

However, when I refuse to give away or let go of a possession is that displaying a sinful attitude of trusting in my own riches? Could this be a concession to my desire to be self sufficient instead of dependent? Is it a blatant rejection of accepting the reality of my need for "daily bread"?

The Scriptures are full of extravagant gifts given to glorify God, but criticized by others. Perfume upon the feet, a feast for sinners, a dance before the ark, a temple of incredible dimensions, a new robe for a lost son, a life laid down.

These individuals did not refuse to give, and give extravagantly.

Point: If we are to claim the name of Christ, than we must live as dedicated followers of Christ. This includes not only loving God with our whole existence, but loving others over ourselves.

Path: Chan challenges the average American Christian to a life of dedicated discipleship. Using Scripture and taking it literally, the author demonstrates that lukewarm Christianity is no Christianity at all.

Sources: Life stories, Scripture, and A.W. Tozer.

Agreement: Living life to the fullest does not mean living for this life, but the next. Chan encouraged me to live a meaningful life by loving God over all. Chapters four and eight are the best chapters.

Disagreement: At times it seems as though Chan is more concerned with limiting suffering than sharing the Gospel. But his point stands that many people accept or reject the Gospel message based on their view of Christians. He makes the comment that the “cloud of witnesses” is composed of God and angels.

Personal App: Am I seeking to help others as though they were Christ himself? Not really.

Favorite Quote: Most are interested in God saving them from the punishment of sin, not being saved from sin. (paraphrase)

Stars: 3.5 out of 5

It would be worth another read and I would recommend it.

As mentioned before, Andrew Peterson is one of my favorite artists. I am challenged by nearly everything he sings and writes. I was running the other day and heard this song in my playlist and it encouraged me greatly as I was meditating on the book of Zephaniah.

Here he discusses how the sang came about. Again, very convicting.

Point: The Christian is not under the law, nor any part of it.

Path: McClain discusses “The Law” in NT usage, How the Law could give eternal life, Law unable to save men, the Divine purpose in giving the Law, God’s written Law and Israel, The Mosaic Law and Gentiles, the Christian and the Law, Dangers of putting Christians under the law, the standard of life for Christians, and finally objections, questions and problems.

Sources: McClain primarily substantiates his argument through his study of Galatians.

Agreement: Many have tried to divide the Law into different categories, and therefore show how the believer is still under sections of the Law. As I read the New Testament it seems to teach that the believer is not under the law because the Holy Spirit indwells and guides. Therefore, it is no longer the law that leads, corrects, and stimulates to do good, it is the Holy Spirit. He has essentially “written the law upon their hearts” (I am sure McClain would cry if he saw that).

Disagreement: I have not yet struggled through teaching the Sermon on the Mount nor the 10 Commandments, otherwise I am sure I would find fodder.

Personal App: All Scripture is profitable.

Disagreement: The author tries to cover too much time. The synagogue has changed throughout the past 2500 years (+ for Levy).

While working on a study in James 2, I came across an interesting connection. James is dealing with favoritism within the assembly (the word he uses is “synagogue” which is another topic for discussion) and warns against showing favoritism to the rich.

He argues that:

The poor have been chosen to be rich in faith
The poor are heirs of the Kingdom
The rich are actually dishonoring those showing favoritism by

Oppressing them
Dragging them into courts

James, in describing the action of the rich, claims they have been “dragging” them into courts. This word is regularly used to refer to forcefully moving something (a sword in John 18:10 and a net in John 21:6) or someone who will not move (Acts 21:30; 16:19) on their own.

Jesus uses this same expression when referring to our hearts.

John 6:44 - “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.”

John 12:32 - “ And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”

That is a fitting description of what he did for me.

Winter Weekend

One of our favorite activities of the year is the Winter Weekend at IRBC.

As the date approaches we can expect several things:
1. The Question: "How many days until the retreat?"
2. The Weather: Threatenings of storms and cold fronts.
3. The Joke: "I don't need a toothbrush!"
4. The Reality: Someone forgot (or failed to use) their toothbrush.
5. The Competition: "Will the Waterboys make an appearance this year in floor hockey?"
6. The Game: "Who will win waterspoons?" (As if anyone actually "wins" that game.)
7. The Purpose: Lots of time to laugh, learn, eat, talk, and share what God is doing in our lives.

We were not disappointed this year in any one of those. We thank God for the opportunity to hear God's Word and reflect upon it in a retreat setting. It was a great weekend.

Disagreement: The old man can be cantankerous at times, and uses the language suited for his demeanor. I also would disagree with his view of religion.

Path: The author delves into the reasons behind the disorganized lives we sometimes live. Showing how the sinfulness of our heart often is the reason that we are not organized, she covers four main idols of the heart: perfectionism, busyness, possessions, and leisure.

Sources: She refers to several other books such as Lou Priolo’s Pleasing People, Carol Cornish and Elyse Fitzpatrick’s Women Helping Women, and Jeremiah Buroughs’ Contentment.

Agreement: This was a wonderful look at organization. Eastin brings out many reasons why we do not live organized lives, and also many reasons that the “organized” lives that we live may not be pleasing to God. Are we fearing what man may think of us if we are not organized and seemingly put-together, or are we striving to honor God?

Personal App: This was a great and refreshing way to view organization. In a culture where organization is sort of the “in” thing to do, it was a blessing to be able to look at why it is important to be organized. It makes me double-check my life and see if I am trying to be organized for the right reasons!

One of my favorite quotes was this: “God is not glorified in the amount of things we get done, the number of spaces we fill on our calendars, or the length of our to-do lists. God is pleased when we serve him with sincere hearts.”

Stars: 4.5 out of 5

Point: The Gospel is the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on behalf of sinners in order to appease the wrath of a righteous God. This truth has an incredible impact on every aspect of the life of the believer.

Path: Chase divides his book into two sections: The Glorious Good News, and Growing in the Gospel. The first details the Gospel and the second deals with its practical ramifications.

Sources: Primarily current evangelical leaders. The quotes and thoughts are taken from men such as Piper, Bridges, Carson, Dever, Mohler, etc.

Agreement: The Gospel is the believer’s only hope in salvation and spiritual living. Without the work of Christ on the cross there is no hope for the justification of sin nor the freedom from sin’s rule.

Disagreement: I agree with the majority of the ideas presented by the author, however there were some statements which I am not sure have been properly thought out. The author begins by stating that the redemptive story is “the story.” I agree that redemption is a center piece of all that has happened, but was that the complete idea. Was the only purpose for God’s creation to have Christ die? It seems that Christ death, while key to the plan of God, was done for something greater, to demonstrate his rule over all things on earth as it is in heaven.

Another side statement made was “This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t schedule a revivalist who preaches the gospel, or bring a Christian band to your Disciple Now event” (pg 192). It seems as though those two things completely go against all which he was trying to say in that chapter.

I felt reading through this that I was reading a sermon from Piper, Dever, or any number of evangelical leaders. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as they are excellent leaders, but it seemed awkward.

Personal App: The Gospel is my hope for today and eternity. I am never over the Gospel.

Stars: 3.5 out of 5

Sources: Based on an incredible imagination and expertise in ancient English history, Tolkien weaves a time tested story.

Agreement: This is probably my favorite book of the entire Fantasy genre, and probably Fiction as well.

Path: Each Old Testament book is given a chapter, whether Genesis or Obadiah. These chapter (or sermons in their original form) are purposely meant to be “airplane views” of God’s divine working in history.

Agreement: I have found these sermons to be very helpful. I have not read through the whole book, but I am using the discussion/thought questions at the end of each chapter for a study through the prophets in our church.

Disagreement: At times the applications seem a little stretched.

Personal App: I would use this book along side of Old Testament devotional reading, or individual Bible studies with the provided questions.

This is a helpful volume to receive the “big picture.”

In this Issue: A Kingdom Note

Can You Remember?

Though children tend to see "I forgot" as an excuse, the Bible seems to see it as a condemnation. God is good to us from our births, and we forget. We look forward, waiting and wondering if and when God will give us what we want. In so doing we forget that we got to this point by the grace of God, forgetting His sundry deliverances along the way. We accept the status quo as our rightful starting point, and dare the ask the Lord of heaven and earth, "What have You done for me lately?

Death, on the other hand, can be good for the memory. Considering what my life will be like without my wife makes me consider what life was like before she blessed us. Already I am finding myself making what were once simple decisions without the blessing of her wisdom, and feeling the paucity of my own insight. I am already living the wisdom of that aphorism that reminds us we will not miss the water until the well runs dry.

I suspect the solution here is less "preparing" for loss, and more gratitude for what was found. That is, as I face a future without the spiritual wisdom of my bride it is less important that I bank what I can still receive from her, and more important that I give thanks to God for all the wisdom He has bestowed over the years through her. Looking through the gift of her wisdom to the source of that wisdom makes it less likely that I will miss her wisdom while I miss her.

My wife's greatest fear today as her final days slip away isn't about herself. That's what she's like. She is worried about me and the children. I seek to put her at ease by reminding her that the source of the wisdom she gave our family isn't her as my wife, but Jesus as my husband. He has been taking care of us through her. When she goes, He will still take care of us.

Years ago as I expressed to my then young bride my heart's desire that He would bless me soon with the honor of a martyr's death she understandably asked, "But who will take care of us?" I replied wisely, "The same Man who has been taking care of you all along." Now I am facing the same truth, that all that we have received through Denise ultimately came from the gracious hand and loving heart of Jesus. And He already died once, and will not die again.

It was the grace of God that gave us all a blessed life in southwest Virginia. Leaving there didn't mean leaving that blessing. In like manner it was the grace of God that gave us the blessed life of having Denise for a wife and mother. Losing her doesn't mean losing that grace. It means remembering where it ultimately came from. To confuse God's means of grace with His grace is to fall into idolatry. To look beyond and through the blessing to its Giver is to understand how our God works through what He has made. God loves me. Where I live, and with whom doesn't change that but reveals that. My calling is to give thanks.

Path: The author overviews key passages, presuppositions, errors, and interpretations of prophetic material in the Scriptures.

Agreement: This short work is a helpful compilation for the beginner. Throughout most of the book the author conceals his own hermeneutical grid, and presents possible options. The short overviews of the OT prophets are also helpful.

Disagreement: The author endorses a combination of a historic and symbolic views in regards to the book of Revelation. I am not sure how this preference coincides with his next statement: “Many prophecies in the Bible have two points of reference. They refer to their own day and they point forward to a future fulfillment.

Personal App: God knows what He is doing.

It would be worth another read and I would recommend it.

Sources: The Trellis and the Vine combines Biblical principles with personal experience and practical insight in order to present a biblical view of ministry.

Agreement: This book is biblically based, helpfully arranged, and easy to read. This is not meant to be a treatise on ministry in the local church, but a helpful guide to biblically evaluating and enhancing one’s ministry. The Scriptures are the foundation, the Gospel is the reason, the Spirit is the means, and prayerful dependence is expected.

There are several helpful charts found on pages 56, 85,87,101,117-18,121.

Disagreement: (not really) Marshall and Payne deliberately make this book accessible to all denominations, sidestepping polity and church distinctions. They openly admit this. This can be understood because if one is faithful to the Scriptures, this is the ministry model that with which every believer must be in agreement.

A second question would be whether their formula for discipleship becomes another program. But again, anything can become just a program.

Personal App: Training individuals is not easy nor quick, but essential. Is my ministry based on programs (trellis) or on disciple making (vine)? Am I seeking to grow the trellis or the vine? Am I excited or discouraged to see disciples move on to faithfully minister in new areas?

Favorite Quote: “...wish them the best of British luck” (196). Couldn’t help but laugh after some of their Australian vocabulary repeated surfaced.

Today is the day.

Five years ago today we said our vows and kissed. We were proclaimed to be man and wife before our families, friends, country, church, and God.

Although we had known each other for over five years, we began a journey which would deepen our relationship in ways we never would have guessed.
As I look back at the last five years I cannot thank God enough for Crystal. There are so many traits that she possesses which proclaim that she is a child of the King, that she lives for something greater. She inspires me to love God and others more.
There are so many areas where I would be completely lost without her (like downtown Minneapolis!). Last night we had a cookie baking activity which took place without any explosions, burns, or cookies that taste like chalk (all of which contribute to good activities, but a little stressful if all together). That can only be attributed to her careful planning and patient servanthood.
She keeps our home in a state of simple and appealing usability. It is clean, organized, and tasteful. I never wonder if our home is presentable for visitors.
I could not ask for a better helper, encourager, spouse, or friend. She means the world to me.

Is there a need to do research anymore? What is the point of research? How should one go about researching a topic? The Craft of Research was written in response to questions like these. Combining years of experience and learning, Booth (posthumously), Colomb and Williams evaluate the art of research and those who master it.

The authors divide their work into four primary sections. The first deals with the big idea of research, researches and readers. Here the focus is on the background and overarching concepts of research. According to the authors, “we do research whenever we gather information to answer a question that solves a problem...”.

The second section addresses the questions related to starting a project. By asking the right questions, the researcher is able to find a topic, narrow it down, find its significance, and begin working toward an answer. The following movement is then addressing the problems presented with the proper sources of information.

The third section revolves around making claims and proposing ideas. As problems are presented, answers need to be given. These answers must be fair, legitimate and reasoned.

The final section presents the process of writing and presenting one’s ideas in a clear manner. From preliminary drafting to final editing, the process is challenging but rewarding. In order to accomplish one’s objectives of clearly communicating an idea the researcher must be willing to work.

The Craft of Research has many valuable principles, ideas, and examples to offer the reader. Through clear writing, helpful examples, and a usable format, the authors provide a manual to encourage and guide the reader in his research.

The Bakken Museum

The other day, Seth and I were able to go to a mansion here in the cities (using the great library passes that Hennepin county libraries allow people to check out).

Not only was the mansion itself a treat to observe (I really enjoy old houses and architecture), but the mansion is actually "a one-of-a-kind museum exploring the mysteries of our electrical world." (See their website: www.thebakken.org.)

A word of caution, you may be shocked. Literally. The museum sports many interactive displays in which the visitor may touch and explore in order to learn about electricity.

I am quite positive that something similar to one of Benjamin Franklin's inventions shocked me all the way to my elbows when I touched it. I really wanted to get my hair to stand on end from static, but that sort of put a damper on my efforts.

The museum also offers the opportunity to watch a display (about twelve minutes long) on the book "Frankenstein." While I decided that I probably would never read the book, it was interesting to see how they used lighting to tell the story. This could be somewhat spooky for little kids, but interesting nevertheless.

I would say that this little museum was worth a visit and I would enjoy going back again someday!

Point: The intent The Modern Researcher is to provide the reader with a helpful guide to the formation and publication of a literary work. In order to accomplish their goal, the authors divide the book in two parts. First, the authors detail the principles and methods of research. Second, they discuss the aspects of writing, speaking, and publishing. These two parts are further explained through chapters addressing each main topic.

The Modern Researcher contributes to the literary field by giving the reader a manual to consult. The material is diverse enough to be a stand alone work. It also is one which would be helpful to consult on a topic by topic basis, answering questions in moments of difficulty.

One of the strengths of this work is the layout. Subcategories can be easily seen when looking for a specific illustration or idea. A detailed table of contents will facilitate the reader in finding the information needed.

Along side the usefulness of this work, there are several main drawbacks. The first of these is that the authors provide too many extended illustrations. While helpful in some situations, many of those provided only contributed to the confusion. Shorter illustrations, or perhaps a distinction through formatting would help to correct this problem.

A second drawback is the antiquity of references concerning the computer. The obvious problem is the speed at which technology is moving, making it nearly impossible to keep a printed work current. However, with the given title, I was expecting something more modern.

The strength of this work is found in helping the reader to grasp the big picture of planning, reading, writing, and presenting his ideas.

Point: The truth of the Gospel must permeate every aspect of my life. Jesus Christ died, was buried, and rose again according to the Scriptures, and that is the foundation of my existence.

Path: This book is basically divided into two key parts. First, Mahaney walks through the story of the cross. Taking individual chapters to explain the physical, emotional, and spiritual elements of Christ’s sacrifice. The second part (placed in several chapters before and after the story of the cross) revolves around the daily aspects of living in light of the Gospel.

Sources: The author cites many current evangelicals such as John Piper, D.A. Carson, Jerry Bridges, and others.

Agreement: The message presented by Mahaney needs to be repeated. Taking time to walk through the story of the cross and its ramifications for my life was a great challenge. The author provides personal illustrations and practical suggestions which make this an extremely helpful book. Keeping the chapters short makes it good devotional reading.

Disagreement: There may be a few verses which I would not have used, a generalization or oversimplification here or there, but no major contentions. Footnotes, instead of endnotes, would have been much more helpful.

Personal App: The message of this book is both challenging and encouraging. As I read through this book I was challenged to daily repeat the Gospel to myself and others. If I step away from the cross, looking for something more, I will always be disappointed.

Stars: 4.5 out of 5

It would be worth another read and I would recommend it. We used it as a book study with our youth group and found it to be helpful.

Decorating Recipe Boxes

Some of the youth group girls came over to decorate recipe boxes as an outreach opportunity. They were also supposed to write out a few verses and give the boxes to a friend, a neighbor, or someone that needed encouragement in an attempt to build a relationship with them. Opportunities for sharing Christ with others can often come through intentional living (building relationships with people who you see consistently: someone in the grocery store, gas station, work, etc.). My neighbors really enjoyed their boxes (especially since they were filled with Apple Pie Chex Mix!

The goal of the authors is not to provide ten easy steps to be understood. Rather, they seek to show the painstaking effort involved in effective communication contrasted with the devastating results of those who do not take the time. Their message is not easy, but it is necessary.

Agreement: One of the strengths of this book are the exercises given. If one would take the time to read thoughtfully and thoroughly, doing the exercises given, he would benefit greatly.

Another strength of Simple and Direct are the twenty principles found throughout the chapters. These short ideas can easily be compiled and reviewed, allowing the reader to remember the advice given.

The message of this book could not be timely enough. Whether through blogs, websites, or self published ebooks, people are speaking. Everyone has a voice, but few speak clearly.

Point: Jack Hawthorne, a normal professor teaching normal archeological classes, steps into an adventure which will challenge his past, present, and very uncertain future.

Path: The reader is led along a mysterious path of a tragic event in Jack’s past, an uncertain relationship with someone he once loved, and a forsaken interest in the Divine.

Agreement: Though starting out somewhat slow, the reader is caught up with the story. Toward the end it is very hard to put down. The author develops the story and keeps suspense. Paced much like the “Da Vinci Code”.

Disagreement: Skeptical attitudes toward Scripture are ever present in the background. The premise of the book seems to be “if facts and experience can prove it, I will believe it”. Jack’s “reconciliation” with God was poor. One comes away with the feeling that Jack and God are friends again.

Stars: 3 out of 5

It would be worth another read as a interesting suspense novel.

I was encouraged by this video posted on another blog.

And he also has a book. I have not read it, but from the reviews, his talk seems to mirror the content of the book.

I would encourage you to play the movie and listen to it as you are working on mondane tasks. The strength of the video is found in his use of questions to open up conversations, and seek to "put a stone in your shoe."He encourages the listener to "go on the offensive in an inoffensive way by using carefully selected questions to productively advance the conversation."

He doesn't stress continued follow up, which I think is a weakness.

Path: Looking at the teachings of Walter Bauer, the authors address his presuppositions in three segments. First the authors deal with “Pluralism and the origins of the New Testament.” The second section discusses “Tracing the development of the New Testament Canon.” The final section answers questions concerning “Manuscripts, scribes, and textual transmission.”

Sources: The authors are constantly addressing Bauer and Ehrman (the popularizer of Bauer). They cite primary sources in the early Church fathers, secondary sources, and current literature. The notes supplied are very helpful.

Agreement: I appreciated their work on this pervasive teaching of Bauer. Their discussion seemed to be fair and reasoned, avoiding petty attacks and shallow rebuttals.

Personal App: The teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ has been faithfully preserved through the text of the New Testament. Praise God!

Stars: 4 out of 5

It would be worth another read and I would recommend it for someone interested in the studies of the Early Church and Heresy.

Who Killed Mr. Boddy?

The teens arrived at church on Sunday night to find that poor Mr. Boddy had been killed in the multipurpose room. Some acted surprised, others indifferent, and a few beastly fellows were quite content. The suspects were interrogated, the evidence reviewed, and the verdict proclaimed. It was Mrs. Peacock and Professor Plum.

Another key finding was made as well. No one in the youth group should seek a career as a private investigator...at least not one who has to work after 9 pm.

Path: Ferguson sets up his chapters by providing quotations from the fathers followed by an explanation or summarization, and ending with a bibliography.

Sources: Primary sources, but addresses pertinent secondary sources.

Agreement: I like the format. Seeing the fathers this way is a good way to be introduced to them. Helpful bibliographies.

Disagreement: The fathers are not best read in small snippets, but doing this has made them more accessible.

Personal App: I need to read more of what the fathers had to say. Their devotion and piety challenges my own lack of it.

Point: Tripp strives to help the reader understand the struggles that they are going through in the light of God’s grace and love for them. This book is so that you as the reader may see God and yourself more clearly, and that you might find the hope that you need to continue on in life.

Path: Tripp takes the reader through a variety of Bible passages, real life stories, and biblical concepts in order that the real problems behind midlife can be shown.

Agreement: I am not at this stage of life, and I found this book immensely helpful! I found myself forgetting that he was talking about a stage in life that I will probably not arriving to for another twenty years. Tripp talks a lot about our identity being worshippers of God and not tied to all of the other things to which our sinful natures draw us.

Tripp shows how midlife just reveals what idols we may have had in our lives for a long time, such as: health, beauty, material possessions, family, finances, among many others. God, in His grace, loves us to much to allow us to be content with these idols. When these things are taken away, we realize that we must trust not in any of the things that were previously mentioned, but in God’s grace and we find hope in the thought of eternity.

Personal App: I was very convicted when the book discussed dying dreams. I began to realize that sometimes we need to die to our own dreams in order to accept God’s plan that is being realized in our life. Often the disappointments in life are caused by us not accepting God as Sovereign. When we let go of our own dreams, we are able to experience something much better, contentment in our Lord.

Agreement: It is not “missions or family” it should be “mission through family.” Too often we think that our lives are too busy caring for our children to think of missions. Rather, we should look how we can involve our whole family in missions.

Disagreement: The author is a proponent of YWAM and other organizations which confuse missions. Also, the strategies are often focused more on humanitarian aid than Gospel presentation.

Point: Belief in any supernatural god is ridiculously unscientific, unhelpful, and dangerous to fellow humans.

Path: Chapter 1 - religion has caused lots of problems, but no one is able to talk about it. It is off limits.

Chapter 2 - "any creative intelligence, of sufficient complexity to design anything, comes into existence only as the end product of an extended process of gradual evolution."

Chapter 3 - all arguments for God fail

Chapter 4 - Argument from improbability - basically a hyped up version of "Who created God?"

Chapter 5 - Answering from where religion comes - a desire, a placebo, a meme? Who can say?

Chapter 6 - "Then why are we good?" 1. We aren't. 2. Misfiring nerves.

Chapter 7 - The Bible is horrific in its dealings with others. Do you really want to claim that?

Chapter 8 - fundamentalism (believing the Scriptures of your faith) undercuts science, and therefore is unacceptable

Chapter 9 - it is child abuse to bring up a child in a religious upbringing.

Chapter 10 - If there is a gap in every person that needs to be filled, why fill it with God? Why not science, art, human friendship, humanism, etc.?

Agreement: Religion - as a form of reaching God - is dangerous.

Disagreement: The author is overly infatuated with science. He is caustic and angry. Full of misinterpretations, exaggerations and over generalizations.

Personal App: Evidence will not argue a person into belief. Only the Holy Spirit can change a heart.

If your description culminated with "big" or "rocky" than you should take a few tips from this book.

Point: Though isolated and relatively useless for monetary value, the Henry Mountains in Southern Utah have geological significance

Path: Following an extensive evaluation of the Henry Mountains, Gilbert submitted a report to the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geographical and Geological Survey of the Rocky Mountain Region. The main portions of the book include and introduction to the location of the mountains, their structure, a detailed description of the mountains themselves, land structures explained, and the general worth of the mountains.

Sources: Intensive study and observation

Agreement: Chapter three, the detailed description of the mountains, was very interesting. It captured my attention not because of something inherently exciting about the mountains themselves, such as majestic waterfalls, sheer cliffs, or deep caves, but because they were interesting to the author. His description of the Henry Mountains made me want to visit them. He described the peaks and the valleys, the cliffs and the plateaus, as though they were special. They were special, not because they were extraordinary, but because they were there.

Disagreement: I disagree with the general presupposition of the age of the mountains, and that the past has been uniform in erosion.

Personal App: I want to see the Henry Mountains. I want to sit and contemplate a feature of the geography which I have so quickly passed over. I want to imagine what workings are going on below the surface of this angry, shaking earth as it pushes lava upward to stain the surface.

Favorite Quote: “Coal, building sone, gypsum, and timber have no value for lack of a market, either present or prospective; gold and silver are not found; and there is little or no land that can be successfully farmed. Only for grazing have the mountains a money value” (152). But yet he spends 152 pages describing the mountains - because they are there!

Stars: 3 out of 5 - this is tough, because taken for the purposes written, I am sure this is valuable. But for the average reader, is this a must read? I doubt it.
